End the Coaching Session With a Next Step Someone Can Use

A thoughtful session can end with everyone still wondering what happens next. “Keep working on it” leaves too much to reconstruct after the clinician has gone.

Say what was decided

Summarize the family’s priority in ordinary language. Name the routine, the question being addressed, and any decision that remains open. If the team needs more information before choosing a strategy, gathering that information can be the next step.

Name the support

If practice fits the individualized plan, clarify what it involves, what the clinician will provide, and what the caregiver wants to try. A demonstration, written reminder, or supported opportunity may fit better than another explanation. Ask what could get in the way before the plan becomes homework.

Check that the agreement is shared

Try: “Does that match what you want to work on, or should we change it?” A caregiver can agree with a goal and disagree with the timing or format. Record the agreed next action, who owns it, and when you will check back.
